The picturesque baroque ambience of the Lamberg Castle Schlossgraben in Steyr, with its round arches and idyllic passages, is again the setting of an Ope®n Air production. Susanne Sommer stages the tragic story set in Japan in the early 20th century. As a major military power and booming economically, Japan maintained close relations with the western world. It is against this historical backdrop that the love story between the American naval officer  Pinkerton and the geisha Cho-Cho-San, called Butterfly evolves. Both are fascinated by each other's “cultural otherness” but the tragic ending is inevitable.
